So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story?
As a kid, I grew up playing sports in Texas and also mentored youth through clubs and organizations. Sports taught me values and provided me with an opportunity to have a great education. I have always had a passion for mentoring and coaching youth. As a professional sports coach for over 15 years, I serve clients in the greater Los Angeles area including the communities of Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu, California. After graduating from university with a degree in Business Administration, I moved to California where I operated various tennis academies in Los Angeles and was the Middle School tennis coach for prestigious Harvard-Westlake School in Beverly Hills. Over the last decade, I mentored and coached many students who went on to become college and professional athletes. In addition, I served on the Fulfillment Fund Board, which helped raise money for university scholarships benefiting underprivileged youth.
My passion is acting as a role model and mentor for youth, not only to help them excel in athletics but also to guide them in their personal growth. This passion for mentoring and coaching led me to create Sports Coaches For Kids so that our team could be a positive influence on today’s youth. My personal mission statement is: “Inspiring youth by giving them the character skill sets they need to succeed in life.”
Has it been a smooth road?
Not always, the road is sometimes rocky! If the road were smooth and no sacrifices were made, then what would success mean? There has to be a risk/reward component to any venture and in life, especially. When I was young, I made poor, risky decisions in business, but now I make educated risk decisions. Success is about working through the process: creating a vision and then focusing on solving problems in the moment in order to reach your vision. In my experience, I started my business without outside capital or business partners, which meant I needed more time to grow my business, but I was fortunate to have the income and flexibility to execute my vision. I “reverse engineered” my business, so to speak. I ventured out, created a vision, and took action. I knew in my conscious mind how to start it and then decided to take action. Most people dream of the end result but never get to fruition, because there isn’t any focus on what needs to happen in the moment, which I did as well. I realized it was about the process, not only in business but all other aspects of life. It’s like a tennis match. Of course, a tennis player wants to win the tournament, but the champions are the ones who envision the end result as they focus on winning one point at a time . . . and then the next one, and then the next. You won’t win all the points sequentially, but your clear focus on the next moment will ultimately lead you to create the end vision.
I also had two business failures before Sports Coaches For Kids, which were not related to coaching. I always had great ideas but poor execution and lack of capital. These hurdles gave me more insight on getting back to what I was good at: coaching and mentoring. This was my gift and I used business knowledge and experience to create Sports Coaches For Kids. In college, I had a business professor who taught me a valuable lesson in the class: always stick to your “Core Competency.” That which you are most passionate about will always be your path to success.
In retrospect, I made bad decisions and good decisions, yet 15 years of experience finally led me to Sports Coaches For Kids. Like in life, business is about making better decisions in order to create and produce and to help develop long lasting, healthy relationships. Lastly, and most importantly, I can say that a successful business is all about the people! I have had the pleasure of working with a fantastic, motivated, and loyal staff of coaches and employees. The business does not work without them. They are the lifeblood of my success.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sports Coaches For Kids story. Tell us more about the business.
Sports Coaches For Kids is a collective group of fun, experienced coaches and sports mentors who are passionate about improving the lives of kids. We specialize in sports development through one-on-one and group lessons, as well as assisting parents with the management of their child’s athletic schedules. Our sports coaches have an extensive background in sports that range from college athletes to coaches who are affiliated with prestigious schools. We coach on location at the client’s residence or at a local park. In addition, we also host “sports-themed” activities for playdates, birthday parties, end-of-school parties, and beach parties. Sports Coaches for Kids provides a fun, nurturing environment to learn while also promoting good values, principles, and technique.
What sets us apart are our services, coaches, and sports parties!
Sports Coaches For Kids also offers Quick Start Sports: Ages 3–6. Our trained coaches go to a residence and with a 30–45 minute lesson, offer kids an introduction to sports at a foundational, beginning level. Coaches provide games and activities with a central focus on hand-eye and foot-eye coordination skills. The goal is to introduce sports with FUN activities scaled down for tikes. Studies show when activities are scaled down there is a higher rate of success. Quick Start Sports is an excellent way to get children ahead of the game!
Sports Coaches For Kids also offers an Exclusive Coach Package. This is a part-time or full-time commitment to a student. The Exclusive Coach will be responsible for organizing and coordinating any league or school sports schedule in addition to attending team practices and competitions. The coach will also organize sports activities for playdates and birthday parties as well as provide progress reports on a monthly basis to monitor a student’s development.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 10 years, the need for coaching and mentoring will grow substantially. With today’s ever-changing technology, kids gravitate towards the tablet or video game rather than getting outside and being active. Sports Coaches For Kids gives families the opportunity to get their kids outdoors and play organized sports. Whether your child just wants to be more active or is part of a school sport, we can meet these needs. Having a fun, knowledgeable, supportive coach/mentor ensures your child gets the most out of learning about sports and also teaches him or her the character skill sets needed in order to succeed in life.
